FVS 12: Women, Khashoggi, Subconscious, Post-truth and Marriage

“Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you’re a man, you take it.”

Hi, this is another edition of “For Value Sake”. A weekly post, it contains a few articles, a book recommendation and a TED talk.  These are the most impressionable resources I consumed during the week, and share them so you can reap some value as I did.  The only goal is to add value. Cheers :)

WOMEN, WORK, AND THE FACADE OF CHOICE

“We shoulder the responsibilities of family life at the cost of our careers — and do so because our husbands and our society demand it.”

Grace looks at why women are paid less in today’s society and the choices they have had to make to preserve the status quo.

JAMAL KHASHOGGI: WHAT THE ARAB WORLD NEEDS MOST IS FREE EXPRESSION

“… Arabs living in these countries are either uninformed or misinformed. “

Jamal a renowned Saudi journalist was murdered 6 weeks ago in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by Saudi agents. He was a strong voice for freedom of speech in the middle east and he paid with his life.  In this last piece published after his death, he once again makes a case for freedom of speech in the Arab world.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND WORK FOR YOU

“During sleep, new synaptic connections are formed, and old connections are ‘cleaned up’. This can allow you to see patterns where none existed before.”

Our conscious mind is only but a tip of the iceberg compared to our subconscious mind.  Every single memory or thought we ever had is lurking below the surface.  Imagine if we could access all this and make use of it.

TED TALK OF THE WEEK: WHAT TO TRUST IN A POST TRUTH WORLD — ALEX EDMANS

“The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already. But the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already.”

  • Leo Tolstoy

This is one deep talk about how to form truths. Alex lays a rigorous framework for determining what is true and what is not.  If its a story is the truth? If its true is backed by large-scale evidence? If it is who is it by? what are their credentials?

PODCAST OF THE WEEK: CAL NEWPORT ON TAKING YOUR LIFE BACK FROM TECHNOLOGY

This is the most impactful resource for me this week.  I had to go get Cal’s book and start reading it too.  In this world of many distractions, “Deep Work” is increasing becoming priceless. Has spurred me to recommit more focus when working.

THE ALL OR NOTHING MARRIAGE: ELI J. FINKEL

Eli takes a deep dive into the history of marriages. His thesis is that if you can figure out what makes the best marriages work, you can engineer a framework that can be used to produce more successful marriages. Very interesting read.  Gives context to a lot of issues like equality in marriage, fulfillment, choice. etc.

Absolutely recommended.
